Google is making Search more conversational.
The company is rolling out a new feature that allows users to ask follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results. With this update, users can seamlessly transition into AI Mode, Google’s conversational search experience designed for more complex queries.
Alongside this change, Google announced that Gemini 3 is now the default model powering AI Overviews worldwide. According to the company, the upgrade delivers “best-in-class AI responses” directly on the search results page.
Together, these updates signal Google’s continued push to move Search beyond static blue links and toward a more interactive, AI-driven experience.
“People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions,” said Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search. “Sometimes you just need a quick answer, like a sports score or the weather. But for more complex questions, you should be able to seamlessly tap into a powerful conversational AI experience.”
Google says internal testing shows users prefer search experiences that naturally evolve into conversations. Allowing follow-up questions while preserving context from AI Overviews makes Search feel more helpful and intuitive.
The new flow is designed to feel continuous users can start with a quick snapshot and dive deeper into a full conversation when needed, without losing momentum.
These updates come just days after Google revealed it’s bringing “Personal Intelligence” to AI Mode. This feature allows AI Mode to draw from sources like Gmail and Google Photos to deliver more personalized responses. Google first introduced Personal Intelligence earlier this month in the Gemini app, with plans to connect across Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history.
Google has also expanded AI Overviews into Gmail, enabling users to search their inbox using natural language. Instead of digging through emails with keyword searches, users can ask questions and get quick answers a change introduced alongside Google’s new AI Inbox.
Overall, Google’s latest moves make it clear: Search is no longer just about finding information it’s becoming an ongoing conversation.
