Apple Teams Up with Google’s Gemini AI to Power Siri in Rare Tech Collaboration

In a move few saw coming, Apple has announced a multi-year partnership with Google that will bring the search giant’s Gemini AI technology into Apple’s ecosystem

including its iconic Siri assistant.

This partnership is a notable departure from Apple’s tradition of developing core technologies in-house. In a joint statement, the companies said Apple chose Google’s AI after a “careful evaluation,” determining it offered “the most capable foundation” to support Apple’s growing AI ambitions.

The collaboration unites two long-time rivals in the smartphone arena Apple’s iOS versus Google’s Android but also long-standing business partners. Google has historically paid Apple billions to remain the default search engine on iPhones, a deal that has drawn regulatory scrutiny for potentially reinforcing Google’s search dominance.

Financial terms of the AI partnership were not disclosed.

Industry analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities called the deal “a major validation moment for Google” and “a stepping stone” for Apple as it looks to accelerate its AI strategy into 2026 and beyond.

Before finalizing the agreement with Google, Apple reportedly explored collaborations with Open AI, Anthropic, and Perplexity. The move comes as Apple faces criticism for trailing competitors in AI innovation. Last month, the company announced the departure of its AI team lead, and a revamped version of Siri originally slated for release last year has now been pushed to later in 2026.

Meanwhile, Google, Microsoft, Open AI, and other tech leaders continue to race forward with AI development in a rapidly evolving market.

Despite this collaboration, Apple stressed that its own AI system, Apple Intelligence, will continue to run on-device for iPhones and iPads, preserving the company’s signature “industry-leading privacy standards.”
