Spotify has launched a new AI-powered feature called “Prompted Playlist” for premium users in the United States and Canada, giving listeners more control over how their playlists are created.
The feature, which previously rolled out in New Zealand, allows users to generate playlists using their listening history along with written prompts or commands. Instead of relying solely on Spotify’s algorithm, users can now guide it directly telling the app what kind of music they want, when they want it, and under what rules.
According to Spotify’s Vice President of Product Personalization, Molly Holder, the goal is to make listeners active participants in shaping their experience rather than passive consumers of recommendations. “Listeners don’t just want Spotify to understand them they want to actively shape their own experience,” she said during a media briefing.
Unlike Spotify’s earlier AI Playlist feature, Prompted Playlist lets users set specific rules for the music selection and choose how often the playlist refreshes, such as daily or weekly. This ensures the content stays fresh and aligned with their preferences.
The rollout is part of Spotify’s broader push to integrate artificial intelligence across its platform as it looks to convert more free users into paying subscribers. It also comes shortly after the company announced a $1 increase in its monthly premium subscription price, bringing the cost to $12.99 in the U.S., Estonia, and Latvia starting in February.
With Prompted Playlist, Spotify is betting that personalization powered by AI but guided by users will make its premium offering even more appealing.
