Google Photos is leaning into meme culture. The app just rolled out a new experimental feature called 'Me Meme' that lets you create memes using your own photos.
Announced Thursday on Google’s Photos Community site, Me Meme uses generative AI to combine a meme template with an image of you, producing a personalized meme in seconds. The feature was first spotted last October by 'Android Authority' while still in development, but it’s now officially on the way to users.
At launch, Me Meme will be available to U.S. users only. Google says the tool is still experimental, so results may not always look perfect. For the best output, the company recommends uploading photos that are well-lit, in focus, and front-facing.
The feature is powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically its image model known as Nano Banana. That same model already drives other creative tools in Google Photos, like restyling images as cartoons or paintings. This time, though, the goal is less about polish and more about play.
While Me Meme is clearly meant to be a fun, low-stakes addition, it serves a larger purpose: keeping users coming back to Google Photos to experiment with AI tools instead of turning to competing apps. Features that let people insert themselves into AI-generated content tend to perform especially well. OpenAI saw this firsthand with the launch of Sora, which allows users to create AI videos featuring themselves and friends.
Me Meme hasn’t fully rolled out yet, so you might not see it in your app right away. Once available, it will live under the “Create”tab in Google Photos. According to a Google spokesperson, the feature will reach U.S. iOS and Android users over the coming weeks.
Using it is straightforward: pick a template (or upload your own), tap “Add photo,” then hit “Generate.” Google says more templates will be added over time. After the image is created, you can save it, share it elsewhere, or tap “Regenerate” to see a new version.
In short: Google Photos wants to help you meme yourself—and it wants you to have fun doing it.
